California Gold Rush Coin

February 3rd, 2010

The California Gold Rush began on Jan. 24, 1848, when gold was discovered by James W. Marshall at Sutter´s Mill, in Coloma, California. News of the discovery soon spread, resulting in some 300,000 people coming to California. These early gold-seekers, called “forty-niners,” traveled by boat & in covered wagons. The effects of the Gold Rush were substantial. San Francisco grew from a small settlement to a boomtown. A system of laws were created, leading to admission as a free state.
